In this Issue:

Hello, I have just returned from the International Council of Reflexologists conference in sunny Cairns. (Yes I know, it’s a hard job, but someone had to go!!!)

Apart from the amazing scenery and climate in Cairns, the conference itself was very inspiring. It was fascinating to see the extent to which reflexology has developed across the Globe. There were matriarchs of reflexology from England, Germany and France; these ladies each have 30 years experience in the field, and all healthy septuagenarians. They were generous with sharing their skills and knowledge. We learnt of the research projects set up in hospitals across the world, many studies are being conducted on the benefits of reflexology in assisting with the health management of patients with cancer. We learnt of the benefits of having reflexology to assist in the reduction of post-operative vomiting and nausea.

Research is well underway in validating what we reflexologists already know to be the benefits of reflexology. Lana (remedial massage therapist) and Tony are proud to announce the safe arrival of their beautiful baby Girl Amelie. Mother and daughter are well.

Lana gives her daughter regular baby reflexology treatments, and reports that now baby Amelie spreads her toes and holds out her feet in preparation of the foot treatment.

You may notice that we have a new format of sending out our newsletter. Due to the size of the article, and time it takes to down load on some computers we have decided to send notification that the newsletter is loaded on our website. This is on a trial basis, so your feedback is welcomed.

So take a few deep breaths, drop those shoulders, and read on.

Feet reading- Window to the Soul

The soles of the feet reflect the physical and the emotional state of the body. By looking at the characteristics of the feet, we gain an insight as to how that person perceives themselves from an emotional perspective. We can identify areas that may be causing stress in their life, thereby identifying the root cause of dis-ease.

These feet are quite different from Right (past) and Left (Present)

The most noticeable feature is the difference in width of the feet. The Left foot is wider in the heel and across the ball of the foot.

This implies that this lady feels less stable or supported in the present than she once did. It looks like she has pulled every thing in and is not as open minded as she once was. She draws on herself now for support, as it appears that in the past, a hurtful relationship (mark in relationship area) has affected how she related to the world in general (more cautious).

The yellow patch under the little toe on the left indicates indignation at feeling constrained by family or society.

The toes on the present are spreading, indicating that she is beginning to calm her mind and allowing others to see who she is (however cautiously)

.

These feet show an intelligent person with lots of ideas. She is more focused now on finding a direction, rather than meandering along.

Orange would be a good colour to surround herself with in the form of flowers, candles and/or clothing to help balance the sacral chakra.

Carnelian crystal may help to assist with the ability to connect with others. She would attract more beauty and joy in her life by focusing and noticing and appreciating the beauty around her.

If you would like your feet read on our newsletter, please send a feet photo similar to the one above and include a measurement of the soles of each foot, plus your body height. Please understand that by doing so you are giving permission for these photos to be used for educational purposes. No names will be used.

If you are interested in learning to read the feet or would like your feet read in more depth then you can book a Feet reading Harmony experience. We also have one day workshops available.

What is The Emotional Freedom Technique? By Deirdre Brocklebank

The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is one of several techniques that have become known today as “Meridian Energy Therapies” or “Meridian Healing Techniques”. It is considered to be a combination of both Eastern and Western medicine and it has evolved from Ayurveda, which is regarded as the oldest and most comprehensive medical science.

Chinese acupuncture and its understanding of the Meridians is believed to be a direct descendant of Ayurveda.

The current EFT has its foundations in the work of Dr Roger Callahan, an American psychologist. Dr Callahan developed Thought Field Therapy (TFT) which is a series of related routines of specific sequences of tapping points on the body, for the relief of specific problems.

It used to be considered by psychotherapy that a negative emotion was caused directly by a negative or traumatic memory or event in a simple cause and effect process. However, Dr Callahan discovered that there was a step in between the memory/thought and the negative emotion. This step was a disruption in the smooth flowing of the energy through the meridian system. Therefore, according to this theory, a negative emotion is not caused directly by the memory of a past traumatic event (ie in the mind), but it arises if a disruption occurs within the energetic meridian flow from the memory or thought. Hence the discovery statement that "the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system”.

The premise on which TFT is based has been applied to EFT by Gary Craig and his associate Adrienne Fowlie who are Certified Masters of The Callahan Techniques and the founders of EFT. Gary’s free manual and extensive information about EFT are located on his website at htpp://www.emofree.com .

Gary found that instead of trying to undo the thoughts or memories, a process that has met with varying degrees of success, EFT directly intervenes in the middle step. When the disruption of the energy system is calmed and relieved, a person no longer experiences further pain and/or or negative emotions from the original memory or thought, as the associated feeling has apparently been disconnected. The specific thought will no longer have power over your behaviour and in your beliefs, thus EFT enables you to change limiting beliefs to empowering ones.

EFT has been described as “an emotional form of acupuncture without the needles” because you relieve symptoms by tapping with your fingertips on certain meridian points. The results are generally permanent but some conditions may take longer than others to change.

I have found that EFT can provide rapid relief from emotional problems resulting from trauma, post traumatic stress disorder, abuse, stress, anxiety, fears, phobias, guilt, depression, grief and addictive cravings. It can also be effective with a wide range of physical symptoms including headaches, body pains and breathing difficulties.

The potential EFT offers is virtually unlimited and everyone can explore it creatively. It can be used with other modalities in a treatment and it can also be self-applied. You don’t have to be a therapist to do EFT as even children can do it. My youngest client was 3 years old.

While Dr Callahan’s premise appears to explain the efficacy of EFT I was curious to know if there could be more to the vibrational impact of EFT on the body than we realise. My findings on this are outlined in my paper “Strong correlation found between EFT and Dr Emoto’s work with water

http://www.emofree.com/articles2/emoto-and-eft.htm

I believe EFT is a great skill for the whole family to use. That’s why I call it “a tool for life”.

Managing Stess By Carolynn Chladkova, Naturopath

Stress is the emotional and physical strain caused by our response to pressure from the outside world. Stress can come from any situation and helps you to cope with, and focus on, the task at hand. Almost everyone will experience feelings of stress or anxiety from time to time, however what is stressful to one person is not necessarily stressful to another.

Common stress reactions include muscular tension, irritability, restlessness, inability to concentrate, headaches, sleep disturbance, stomach upsets, fatigue, sweating, raised pulse rate, and shortness of breath. Chronic stress can exacerbate existing health disorders and contribute to creating serious illness. It is therefore important that we learn to manage out stress levels on a daily basis, and in a positive way……

Diet

Avoid coffee, tea, chocolate, cola, or anything else that contains caffeine or is defined as a stimulant. Also avoid all refined and processed foods. These foods and beverages can exacerbate stress reactions.

Include the following foods in your diet: asparagus, apricots, bananas, avocados, brown rice, dried fruits, fish, garlic, leafy green vegetables, legumes, raw nuts and seeds, soy products, whole grains and yogurt. These foods supply valuable vitamins that are depleted by stress.

Herbal teas that may be of benefit are chamomile, skullcap, and valerian.

Relaxation & Exercise

Exercise should be performed on a regular basis. Choose a form of exercise that works for you and can be easily integrated into your lifestyle. After a few weeks of regular exercise most people report a decrease in stress levels.

Relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, tai chi, guided imagery, specific breathing techniques, and progressive muscle relaxation can be extremely helpful. Take a warm bath before bed. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil, light some candles, play some quiet music in the background and relax!

Flower Essences

Flower essences operate on an emotional level to release negative beliefs and restore balance by creating a positive emotional state. The following Australian Bush Flower Essences may help to relieve mild forms of stress:

Black-Eyed Susan – for people “on the go”, continually expending energy, this flower essence allows you to slow down, turn inward and be still.

Crowea - for people who continually “worry”, this flower essence can create a feeling of peace and calm. It also increases vitality and balances and centres the individual.

Acupressure

The following acupressure points can relieve stress, nervousness and mild anxiety by increasing circulation throughout the body and creating a feeling of wellbeing. When using these pressure points, do so with your eyes closed and focus on your breathing – this will help to create a feeling of deep relaxation. Gently, but firmly, press each point for approximately one minute. Do not hold any one point for longer than ten minutes.

Heavenly Pillar: located one finger width below the base of the skull, either side of the spine on the ropy muscles, this pressure point may help relieve stress, over exhaustion, and insomnia.

Sea of Tranquillity: located on the centre of the breast bone, this pressure point may help to relieve nervousness, anxiety, chest tension, and other emotional imbalances.

Third Eye Point: located directly between the eyebrows in the indentation where the bridge of the nose meets the forehead, this pressure point may calm the body to relieve nervousness.

Balance

Leading a balanced lifestyle where you take regular breaks from work to spend time performing activities that bring pleasure is very important. Schedule some leisure time every day and spend time with people you enjoy.

Stress or anxiety is usually relieved when the triggering event is resolved. It is a problem however when it becomes an irrational apprehension or fear of everyday situations (e.g. meeting new people, riding in an elevator, leaving the house) and when the source of the anxiety is not always known or recognised. If you are someone who finds it difficult to control your worry or stress or if you feel anxiety interferes with your day-to-day life, consult your doctor or a health professional.
